Promoted, Suppressed and Remodelled: The Hardwired Destiny of Genetic Messages

Iron is an essential micronutrient that plays pivotal roles as an electron donor and catalyst across organisms. To counteract limited iron availability, a situation frequently encountered in alkaline soils, plants have evolved a suite of mostly transcriptionally regulated responses that mediate the acquisition of iron from recalcitrant pools. In collaboration with Wendar Lin from the bioinformatics core lab, En-Jung Hsieh and Wolfgang Schmidt discovered a network of concatenated homeostatic mechanisms that are induced in response to iron deficiency in a precisely timed pattern to ensure supply is matched to demand......

Concept of Fluorescent Transport Activity Biosensor for the Characterization of the Arabidopsis NPF1.3 Activity of Nitrate.

The NRT1/PTR FAMILY (NPF) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plays a major role as a nitrate transporter. The first nitrate transporter activity biosensor NiTrac1 converted the dual affinity nitrate transceptor NPF6.3 into fluorescence activity sensors. To test whether this approach is transferable to other members of this family, screening for genetically encoded fluorescence transport activity sensor was performed with the member of the NPF family in Arabidopsis......

Translation initiation landscape profiling reveals hidden open reading frames required for the pathogenesis of tomato yellow leaf curl Thailand virus.

Plant viruses with densely packed genomes employ non-canonical translational strategies to increase the coding capacity for viral function. However, the diverse translational strategies used make it challenging to define the full set of viral genes. Here, using tomato yellow leaf curl Thailand virus (TYLCTHV, genus Begomovirus) as a model system, we identified genes beyond the annotated gene sets by experimentally profiling in vivo translation initiation sites (TISs)......
