Major challenges in plant stress research and mitigating climate change impacts on plants

Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of environmental stress that limit crop productivity and disrupt plant ecosystems. These stresses include drought, heat, and soil salinization. Plant science will increasing be called upon to help respond to the challenges of climate change. Paul Verslues recently coordinated an article describing major unknowns and challenges in plant abiotic stress research as envisioned by 15 internationally prominent research groups......

MEX3A mediates p53 degradation to suppress ferroptosis and facilitate ovarian cancer tumorigenesis

Dr. Wendy W. Hwang-Verslues at Genomics Research Center discovered that the RNA-binding protein MEX3A is a key gene that OCCC cells use to suppress p53 anti-cancer function. These results were recently published in the prestigious journal Cancer Research......

New direction for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection combination of anti-CLEC5A monoclonal antibody with antibiotic

The research team led by Dr. Shie-Liang Edmond Hsieh, distinguished professor in the Genomic Research Center of Academia Sinica, published an article in JCI Insights recently to reveal a novel mechanism of P. aeruginosa-induced lung injury and develop a novel approach to increase treatment efficacy as well as attenuate tissue damage. This discovery bring a novel strategy and direction to treat bacterial infections......

Comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses of trans-kingdom pathogen Fusarium solani species complex reveal degrees of compartmentalization

Two species from the FSSC clade three—F. falciforme and F. keratoplasticum—were the predominant species occurring in diseased sea turtle nests worldwide, and the latter was also recently reported to infect Podocnemis unifilis, an endangered freshwater turtle species. Koch’s postulates were fulfilled for F. keratoplasticum, which can cause disease and high mortality rate (83.3%) in sea turtle Caretta caretta eggs. The disease is now termed sea turtle egg fusariosis and is responsible for low hatching success of eggs from both natural nests and man-made hatcheries......

Detecting different RNAs in the same cell

In biological study, one sometimes needs to detect the simultaneous presence of a micro RNA (miRNA) and its putative target mRNA in the same cell. As no such technique is unavailable, we develop a in situ method for this purpose. It uses rolling-circle amplification of RNAs to achieve a high signal/noise ratio. It can be applied to simultaneous detection of multiple RNAs in the same cell......
