A Pioneer of Allelopathy

Dr. Chou is one of the earliest pioneers and has been devoted to the allelopathy and allelochemicals researches for over 50 years. He started his allelopathy-related research, the phytotoxic substances from sugar cane roots, since he was a master student......

Population genomics of the Xylella fastidiosa subspecies fastidiosa in Taiwan

The plant pathogen Xylella fastidiosa subspecies fastidiosa causes Pierce’s disease (PD) of grapevines and is a threat in multiple regions across America, Europe, and Asia. In this collaborative work that involved the University of California, National Taiwan University, Taiwan Agricultural Chemicals and Toxic Substances Research Institute, and Academia Sinica, the research team conducted population genomics analysis of this pathogen in Taiwan......

Nuclear-encoded CFM6 involved in mitochondrial intron splicing

The research team in Dr. Wan-Hsing Cheng lab at the Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology found that CFM6 (CRM Family Member 6), a CRM-domain containing protein, functions specifically in the splicing of intron 4 of mitochondrial nad5. As nad5 encodes a subunit of mitochondrial respiratory complex I, splicing failure in cfm6 mutant led to the loss of complex I activity and to its improper assembly. Moreover, dysfunction of complex I resulted in abnormal mitochondrial morphology, stunted growth, curled leaves and sterility in the mutant plants. Taken together, our results indicate that CFM6 is a newly discovered splicing factor of nad5 transcript in Arabidopsis mitochondria. This study provides an important insight into the understanding the regulatory mechanisms of mitochondrial gene expression in plant cells......

Novel MMT-based iron/platinum nanoparticles designed to enhance MRI contrast and HCC treatment

Since liver tissue actively absorbs iron ions, detecting HCC with a general iron-based contrast agent is difficult. And considering gadolinium can stay in the body for months to years after receiving these drugs, it is an urge to create novel nanocomposites for enhancing the noise-signal ratio of MRI to improve the diagnosis accuracy for tumors......
